This is just a short video taken from the tail end of my day at the range with my sister. The video camera battery ran out just a few minutes into our shoot with the P226 Diamond Plate, so, this video is only a few minutes long.
It was a family affair at the range yesterday. My sister and new brother-in-law stopped by to visit me on their way to their new life in Chicago. Their cross country trip brought them to Washington and a trip to the range was most definitely in order.
They are both novice shooters, so I started them out on a Ruger 10/22 with a red dot scope but we quickly moved up to my DPMS Panth Arms AR15, then my WASR AK47 with laser and lastly a 1944 Izhevsk 91/30 Mosin Nagant and yes, my sister did in fact, have a bruise on her shoulder at the end of the day.
Her favorite rifle was the WASK AK47 equppied with a laser, because as a novice, she was having trouble using iron sights, as on the AR15. She was hitting the mark, however, with the laser. As for my brother-in-law, he really enjoyed shooting the Mosin Nagant. They were both able to get their shots "on paper" after a few rounds and a fun day was had by all.
It was great to see my sister, I wish her good luck starting a new life, with her new husband in Chicago!
Enjoyed a great day at Range 15 on Joint Base Lewis McChord, formerly known as Fort Lewis.
Today my friend Joe and I took out a total of 5 rifles, two models of which I'd never shot and three rifles which had never been shot by anyone ever!
The Winchester 94 in .30-30 is one of the ones that had never been shot before. It's a family heirloom and we think it's a 1970-s era model 94. Today was the first day it had EVER been shot. I took some time to clean it up for Joe last year, I guess it had just been sitting all these years, but today was absolutely the first day it had ever been fired. The lever action takes a little getting used to, but she was a great shooter and something you would definitely consider taking on a hunting trip. That .30-30 round could take down some decent size game!
I always love shooting AK47's. I guess my enthusiasm about AK47's must have rubbed off on Joe because he recently went out and bought his own! He had shot my WASR before, but this was the first time he was shooting his very own. I also took my WASR as well as my new Polish AK47 underfold. All 3 rifles shot nicely, however, Joe's AK had a couple of malfunctions during the first magazine through it. I think because it was brand new and maybe needed a little lube or just needed a couple rounds through it to break it in. But there were no further failures after that first magazine.
The best shooting rifle of the day was hands down, the 1954 Russian Tula SKS. This was our first time ever firing one and it shot like a dream. The action was smooth, very low recoil and it was extremely accurate. The SKS moved right to the top of my list for my current favorite rifle to shoot in my collection.
I called the BATFE and asked about who can sign my Certification of Compliance and it turns out I can certify it myself. Seems a little redundant. Anyway, my application is ready to go, I just need to send a copy to my local CLEO.
*****
I've decided to "pull the trigger" and apply for my Curious and Relics license with the BATFE. I downloaded the application this morning and filled it out. Along with the C&R license application there's a Certification of Compliance for US citizenship. I guess someone else has to certify that I'm a US citizen, there weren't any real clear instructions as to who can certify it, I guess a friend?
I also have to submit a copy of my application to the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in my county, which in my case is the Pierce Country Sheriff, so I'll do that this week as well.
I'll check back in and let you know how long the process takes and whether or not I got the C&R license.
I'm hoping that getting approved for my FFL will be more likely if I already have a C&R license. I plan to apply for my FFL early next year so that I can start buying and selling online! Perhaps an online store is in my future?
I apologize about the audio quality. I actually recorded it using my cell phone. I'm still not totally set-up for audio recording in my home music studio, but I will be soon, so you can expect better quality audio in the future.
In the meantime, enjoy this video on cosmoline removal using a heat gun!
I wasn't overly impressed with the grip that came with my new Polish AK47 underfolder. Just as I had with my WASR-10 AK47, I swapped out the grip with a brand new Hogue rubber grip. The difference is night and day, I simply can't recommend Hogue grips enough. The are super comfortable and also help reduce recoil, but mostly the just feel good in your hand.
Here is the first of many new videos to come on My Gun Diary. Basically just wanted to crank one out rather quickly, set up my lights, do a quick edit and upload to figure out my production process. Please subscribe to my YouTube channel and stay tuned for more videos! I'm still unpacking and settling in after my deployment so be patient.
I'm just getting settled in to my new apartment, waiting for furniture etc. I've also got a nice video lighting set on the way and will be ready to produce my first batch of videos for the blog.
First up will be my stock replacement on my vz24.
Other videos to follow will be:
Refinishing AK47 wood.
Replace barrel band on 1946 Spanish Mauser
Replace grip on Polish AK47 underfold
Reviews of all weapons in my collection
And more!
